From the Frontline to the Boardroom
Stephen Barr’s Journey at Start360
When Stephen Barr first walked through the doors of Start360 in 2002, he saw it as a temporary stopgap – a one-year detour before returning to grassroots youth work. Twenty-four years later, he’s still here and he wouldn’t have it any other way.
Stephen’s story is one of unexpected growth, resilience, and deep purpose. Leaving school with no qualifications, he never imagined he’d one day sit on the Strategic Leadership Team (SLT), shaping policies, leading change, and mentoring others. Within just six months of starting, he was promoted to Senior Youth Advisor, and his leadership journey took off from there.
“Start360 gave me the opportunity to stand up,” Stephen reflects. “I’ve helped plan, develop, and manage services that change lives. We invest in potential, and that’s what makes this work so rewarding.”
The Shift from Doing to Leading
Becoming part of the SLT was a turning point, but it didn’t come without challenges. The transition from operational work to strategic leadership required a new mindset, a new skillset, and a new way of thinking.
“Suddenly, it’s not just about getting the job done – it’s about seeing the bigger picture,” Stephen explains. “You have to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. You refine things, lead from the front, and foster creativity.”
One of the biggest lessons? Balancing leadership and management. Leadership is about innovation, vision, and inspiring others, while management is about efficiency, structure, and problem-solving. Great leaders do both, and they do it well.
A Bold Vision for the Next 10 Years
For Stephen, Start360’s future is all about growth, impact, and continuous improvement. He envisions an organisation that is constantly evolving, with a commitment to quality improvement and maximising impact at every level. Over the next decade, he wants to see Start360 not only strengthening its local presence but also expanding its influence nationally and internationally, ensuring its innovative approaches remain at the forefront of service delivery. He believes in a strategy that is alive and adaptable, one that informs daily practice while also driving long-term goals. This means recruiting and retaining top talent, providing opportunities for staff to develop and grow, and making sure services remain relevant in a rapidly changing world. For Stephen, the ultimate goal is for Start360 to be the first choice for funders, partners, and communities; an organisation known for its innovation, effectiveness, and deep commitment to the people it serves.
People Are the Heart of Everything We Do
Ask Stephen what makes Start360 stand out, and he’ll give you one answer: the people.
“Our operational staff are our biggest asset,” he says. “If we build their skills, expertise, and confidence, they’ll bring our policies to life.”
Investing in people is more than just words, it’s embedded in everything Start360 does. Staff are given opportunities to step up, develop, and lead. Volunteers are welcomed with open arms. Service users help shape strategy and decision-making.
“We take the time to see people where they are, not where we want them to be,” Stephen says. “That’s how we make a real difference.”
Leading Through Challenges with Courage and Compassion
Working in the charity sector comes with its challenges, and Stephen has seen them all. Non-recurring budgets, funding uncertainties, staff retention pressures, the list goes on.
“We’re a not-for-profit organisation, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have to think about sustainability,” he explains. “Losing good staff would be catastrophic, and we fight hard to make sure that doesn’t happen.”
Every tough decision he makes comes down to two simple questions:
- Is it fair?
- Is it reasonable?
“Hard decisions need to be informed decisions,” Stephen says. “That’s what builds trust, keeps us accountable, and ensures we stay true to our mission.”
Passion, People, and Purpose Keep Him Going
After 24 years, what still motivates Stephen to get up every morning and do this work? ‘It’s the people’.
“A bad day at Start360 is still better than a good day anywhere else,” he says with a smile. “Working with people is humbling. Everyone needs a break in life—peace of mind, health, love. If we can be part of giving that to someone, that’s everything.”
He believes the best leaders aren’t the ones with the longest list of qualifications, but the ones who have the courage to stand up, the patience to support others, and the time to listen.
“Fortune favours the brave,” he says. “You win and lose every day, but if you stay true to your purpose, the impact is real.”
Leaving a Legacy That Lasts
When Stephen thinks about the mark he wants to leave, he keeps it simple: “If I impact just one person, that’s enough.”
His leadership philosophy is about lifting others up, making space for the next generation, and embedding a culture of excellence. “Our staff aren’t afraid to fail, because we build them up to succeed.”
A Message to the Start360 Community
To the supporters, volunteers, staff, and partners who make Start360’s work possible, Stephen has one final message:
“Every contribution is valid. Without diversity, without inclusion, we wouldn’t be the vibrant, inspirational organisation we are today. Thank you for being part of the journey.”
Stephen Barr’s leadership is a testament to what’s possible when passion meets purpose. His story is proof that even an unplanned journey can lead to extraordinary places and that investing in people is always worth it.
