A Life-Long Commitment to Change

Kathleen Grego’s Journey at Start360

Few people can say they have dedicated over 26 years to one organisation, but for Kathleen Grego, Start360 has been more than just a workplace, it has been a calling. As the longest serving current staff member, Kathleen has played a pivotal role in shaping the organisation’s services, leadership, and impact on communities across Northern Ireland. From her early days as a Youth Advisor to her current role as Director of Services, Kathleen’s career is a testament to her unwavering commitment to creating meaningful change.

The Path to Leadership

Kathleen’s journey in youth and community work began with an innate ability to connect with young people. Initially pursuing a degree in Geography and Spanish at Ulster University, she later earned a Master’s in Hotel and Event Management. However, her passion for working with marginalised young people steered her away from the traditional education route and into a lifelong career at Start360 (formerly Opportunity Youth). “I knew within the first week that I would stay for a long time,” she reflects. “I was passionate about improving outcomes for people who shouldn’t be struggling as much.”

Her leadership journey evolved organically. Winning the Youth Advisor of the Year award was an early indication of her potential. She transitioned into management, overseeing services in North and West Belfast before expanding across Northern Ireland. From workforce training to sexual health clinics, from mental health initiatives to school-based support projects, Kathleen has been at the forefront of developing and delivering essential services to at-risk young people.

Leadership and Integrity

For Kathleen, leadership is not about perfection but about integrity, accountability, and resilience. “As a leader, you have to be self-aware, know your strengths and weaknesses, and be willing to listen,” she says. She describes herself as direct and firm, yet fair. “I treat people with respect and compassion because the work we do is difficult, our staff are dealing with trauma, substance use, and mental health crises every day.”

Maintaining an open-door policy is a cornerstone of her leadership. “Staff need to feel they can talk freely. Good leadership is about building trust, empowering people, and ensuring they feel valued.”

One of her key responsibilities is advocating for those who rely on Start360’s services. “I will not leave a room until our message has been heard,” she says with conviction. Whether it’s fighting for funding, lobbying for policy changes, or ensuring that frontline staff receive the support they need, Kathleen is committed to being a voice for the voiceless.

A Vision for the Future

When asked about her long-term vision for Start360, Kathleen’s response is clear: “In 10 years, I want us to still be here, providing quality services and meeting needs.” She envisions community hubs where people can come in, have a cup of tea, and feel supported. “Every interaction should leave someone feeling better than when they walked through our doors.”

However, she is acutely aware of the challenges ahead, particularly in securing stable funding. “We know the need is greater and more complex than ever. The real challenge is meeting that need with limited resources while maintaining the quality of our services.” But she remains optimistic. “We are a creative organisation, and we always stand over the quality of our work.”

Collaboration and Teamwork

Kathleen credits much of Start360’s success to its strong leadership team. “Between us, we have over 100 years of experience. We challenge each other, we listen, we talk, and we always walk in the same direction; everything we do is about the people coming through our doors.”

She also places a strong emphasis on staff engagement.

“If we don’t listen to our staff, service users, or volunteers, we shouldn’t be doing this job. Real participation means true listening and making tough decisions with their input.”

The Essence of Leadership in the Charity Sector

Kathleen is passionate about mentoring the next generation of leaders in the sector. Her advice? “You cannot do this work without commitment. It’s not about making money – it’s about making a difference. If you’re willing to stand up and advocate for those who need support, this is the role for you.”

She emphasises resilience and the importance of personal and professional growth. “You will win and lose, but you have to stay close to your core beliefs. Leadership in this sector demands hard work, passion, and the courage to make difficult decisions.”

Legacy and Impact

We asked Kathlee what legacy she hopes to leave behind at Start360, and she answered passionately “I want to be known as a person of integrity, someone who got the job done and wasn’t afraid to fight for what’s right,” she says.

“I hope that, in some way, I’ve helped make people’s lives better.”

Her proudest moment remains the start of her leadership journey. “Getting my first management position was huge for me. I had so much to give, and I was excited to grow within this organisation. I still feel that pride today.”

After 26 years, Kathleen Grego remains as passionate as ever about Start360’s mission.

“Even on the toughest days, I know I’m part of something special, something that is moving, thriving, and changing lives.”

Her message to the community and supporters? “I feel blessed to work with such inspiring people. They care, they are committed, and they don’t stop until the work is done. It’s a privilege to be part of this.”
