Leadership, Legacy, and Changing Lives:
A Conversation with Danny McQuillan, CEO of Start360
In the ever-evolving landscape of the Charity Sector, strong leadership is essential. Danny McQuillan, CEO of Start360, has spent decades working across Youth Work, Justice, Homelessness, Disability, Health, and Employability services in Northern Ireland.
His journey from volunteer to leading one of the most impactful charities in the region is a testament to his passion and commitment to learning and making a difference. In this candid interview, Danny shares his insights on leadership, the challenges of the sector, and what truly drives him to make a difference.
A Journey Rooted in Community
Danny’s career has been shaped by his early experiences in youth and community work. His passion for community engagement began in 1990 when he participated in his first cross-community initiative. This ignited a passion to engage, to learn and to make a difference. This formative experience led him to advocate for safe spaces for young people from all backgrounds to meet and discuss policy and politics a passion that still drives him as a Board Member for Politics in Action.
His leadership journey took him through various roles, from the Marks & Spencer to leading a wide range of community and voluntary sector initiatives across N.Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. He credits the many wonderful volunteers and colleagues he has engaged with over the last 30 plus years as being instrumental in this Journey.
Reflecting on his path, Danny describes his appointment as CEO of Start360 in 2022 as a kind of “homecoming.” With Youth Work at the core of Start360’s mission, he saw this as an opportunity to align his personal values with a leadership role that allowed him to create lasting change.
The Philosophy Behind His Leadership
Leadership in the charity sector demands a deep sense of awareness, both of the big picture and the small, everyday moments that shape an organisation’s impact. Danny credits his parents for instilling in him the value of service. His father’s commitment to volunteering and his mother’s support for homeless charities taught him the importance of giving back.
At Start360, his leadership is defined by openness, collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to the organisation’s mission.
To be an effective leader is to bring people on a journey,” he says.
“It’s not always going to be easy but living the organisations values in everything you do is essential alongside the support of an informed and challenging Board. Openness and transparency and listening to hear is what makes a good leader.”
Balancing Strategy with Immediate Needs
Setting priorities in a charity that spans multiple sectors – Justice, Health, and Employability – requires a delicate balance. With a structured Management Team and an engaged Board, Start360 ensures that both immediate and long-term needs are addressed.
“Strategy is about balance,” Danny explains. “We take a collegiate approach, bringing people with us, ensuring staff are engaged and informed.” Communications have been a priority from the start of his tenure as CEO. “I knew Start360 was doing fantastic work, but not enough people knew about it. Now, the stories just keep coming.”
Staying Connected to People and Purpose
For Danny, leadership isn’t about sitting behind a desk, it’s about being on the ground, engaging with service users, and witnessing firsthand the transformative impact of Start360’s work.
I love hearing their stories and seeing how they have changed their lives with our support” he says
His involvement extends beyond Start360; he sits on the board of Polictics in Action and Newington Housing Association is an active member of NICVA and CO3, ensuring that he stays informed about the broader sector.
If you work in the sector then I feel you must give something back and volunteering is one way I do this’.
One of the highlights of the year for Danny is Start360’s annual celebration event, which showcases real change and gives a platform to those who have been impacted by the organisation’s work.
Transforming Challenges into Opportunities
Leading a charity that addresses complex issues like mental health, substance use, and employment comes with significant challenges. Funding remains a constant struggle, especially amid increasing demand for services. Retaining skilled staff in a tough financial climate is another pressing concern.
We are only as good as our staff,” Danny emphasises. “That’s why we undertook a full review of salary terms and conditions, to ensure we’re competitive and fair.”
Despite the challenges, Danny remains steadfast in his belief that staying true to Start360’s values is the key to navigating uncertainty.
Holding tight to our strategy and being pragmatic in meeting objectives helps us stay the course.”
A Culture of Empowerment and Integrity
Empowering his team is central to Danny’s leadership philosophy.
We value all contributions. This is a safe space to challenge and to be proven wrong,” he says. Transparency and honesty are non-negotiable. “We manage expectations, balance competing priorities, and ensure our work is research-driven and evidence-based.”
This approach fosters a culture where staff feel valued and supported.
There is never a negative feeling when things are challenged – we actively listen and adapt.”
Measuring Success and Leaving a Legacy
For Danny, success isn’t about personal accolades, it’s about changing lives.
Success looks like people like Liam, a former volunteer who is now a staff member’ he says
These personal stories of transformation define Start360’s impact.
Beyond the organisation, Danny’s leadership extends to advocating for social justice. One of his proudest moments was standing against recent violence toward immigrants in Northern Ireland.
I want to be a leader who calls out unkind and un-communitarian attitudes,” he states firmly. “It’s not enough to talk about change – we have to take a stand.”
Advice for Future Leaders
For those considering leadership in the charity sector, Danny offers a simple yet profound piece of advice:
Don’t do it if you don’t care. Don’t do it if you don’t believe in your mission and values. And if those values change, it’s time to leave.”
His words serve as a powerful reminder that true leadership is about passion, conviction, and a relentless commitment to making a difference.
As he continues to steer Start360 into the future, one thing is clear – Danny McQuillan is not just leading an organisation; he is shaping a legacy of impact, inclusion, and unwavering dedication to the communities he serves.
